3 Causes of Irregular Menstrual Cycle

The Ayurveda Experience March 06, 2016

Health in Ayurveda is having a symptom free body and, a happy and content state of mind. Many women struggle with a lack of happy and content state of mind prior to menstruation.

Balanced menstruation occurs when the cycle is regular and predictable, you notice no comfort before, during or after the menses. It means no physical or mental discomfort.

Typically menses last from 4 to 6 days with moderate flow throughout, this would indicate that you have adequate levels of the endometrium to support implantation of a fertilized egg. The goal of the body is to prepare the uterus for fertilized eggs. The menses occur because there was no fertilized egg.

Menstrual imbalances and their potential causes:

    1. Irregularity in menstrual cycle is caused by fluctuation in hormone levels. One of the major causes for fluctuation in hormonal levels is stress. If your cycle is irregular or if you’re struggling with PMS, it doesn’t mean that you have an imbalance for a few days in a month, it means that the stress of your entire month is so great that your body is struggling to maintain balance. This is because your body has to deal with those extra hormones that are present right before your period.
    1. Another factor that may drive irregular cycle could be ‘ama’.

Toxicity can be result of either vata or kapha dosha that disturbs the Agni. Vata dosha with its variable Agni can create ‘ama’ in the system. Kapha dosha with its low Agni can create ‘ama’ in the system.‘Ama’ is a problem in the female reproductive system because it interferes with the cells ability to receive the hormones.
    1. The third factor that could cause irregular cycle is the liver. The liver is responsible for over 500 metabolic jobs, if the liver is overworked because your diet is full of impure food, or the environment is full of impure foods. Or, because you are under stress, you are ingesting something in your system for which the liver has to focus on removing it from your bloodstream. Then you can give into liver dysfunction or it could also have liver disease of some sort. So your irregular cycle is an indication that you need to take a look at your stress levels, digestion and the formation of dhatu and you need to consider taking care of your liver.
