Lower Breast Cancer Risk With Flax Seeds

The Ayurveda Experience January 29, 2016

“Whenever flax seeds become a regular food among the people, there will be better health.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Flax seeds provide the richest dietary source of phytoestrogens called lignans. Those can cause the body to produce less active forms of estrogen, which may contribute to lowering the breast cancer risk.

Flax seeds contain about 338 times as many lignans as sunflower seeds, 475 times as many as cashew nuts, and 3,200 times as many lignans as peanuts. Regular consumption of ground flax seeds reduces cell growth in breast tissue.

Choose ground over whole flax seed.  The body digests ground flax seeds better than whole flax seeds, which may go through the GI tract undigested. So, make sure you receive all of the potential health benefits by consuming ground seeds and drinking plenty of fluids. Refrigeration in an airtight container after opening the package will make your flex seeds last fresh for up to 4 months.

    Serving Tips

    • Add ground flax seeds onto your cereal and breakfast shake.
    • Sprinkle some ground flax seeds on top of cooked veggies or fruits.
    • Add a tablespoon of flax seed oil to smoothies.
    • Add ground flax seeds to replace eggs when baking.
    • Make your own flax seeds butter. A combination of pumpkin and sunflower seeds is delicious.
