How To Prevent Dry Skin And Dry Scalp In Cold Season

The Ayurveda Experience November 13, 2017

Cold season is here and the major problem faced during this period is dry skin and dry scalp. Here are few simple Ayurvedic tips to tackle this concern.

Dry skin and dry scalp is due to predominance of Vata dosha. When Vata dosha increases in the body it reduces Kapha dosha and makes the skin dry and wrinkled. Dry scalp can lead to dandruff as well. Other clinical features of dry skin and scalp include itching, cracking of the skin and burning sensation.

Home Remedies To Prevent Dry Skin And Dry Scalp

1. Include ghee in your diet daily.

Other wholesome diet habits include the intake of food predominant in the bitter and astringent taste, red rice, green gram, warm water and other easily digestible food.

Food rich in vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids help to keep the scalp in good health. This includes drumstick, mango, pomegranates, sunflower seed, almonds, pine nuts, peanuts, spinach, taro root, flaxseed oil, soybean and pistachios.

Broccoli, carrots, chard, mustard and turnip greens, nuts, papaya, pumpkin, red peppers, flaxseeds, walnut, sardines, salmon, soybeans, tofu, shrimp, Brussel’s sprouts, cauliflower, winter squash, fish oil, egg oil, krill oil, chia seeds, canola oil, camelia and coconut.

2. Apply oil externally.

Abhyanga is highly recommended to prevent dry skin. In case of dry scalp, head massage or shiro abhyanga is advised.

3. Moisturize with yogurt.

Mix fenugreek powder and besan flour with yogurt and apply to the skin before a bath to prevent dryness. Fenugreek powder and yogurt alone can be applied to the scalp as well.

4. Stay hydrated.

Keep your skin moisturized from the inside by drinking at least eight glasses of water a day and eating plenty of sweet, juicy fruits.

5. Try a homemade face mask.

A face mask of honey, egg, olive oil and rose water works very well for dry skin.
