The Ayurveda Experience July 08, 2022

Are you dealing with fine lines, dullness, and wrinkles? Aging is intrinsic to our lives and one can lose the younger-looking skin with age. There are many factors regulating the aging of the skin such as genes, lifestyle, diet, and pollution among others. Though inevitable, one can age gracefully with youthful skin, by adopting a healthy lifestyle in the Ayurvedic way.

Aging of the skin is one of the most predominant and talked about concerns in the cosmetic and skin care industry. People around the world spend billions on skincare and beauty products to dodge the gradual aging of the skin. However, the process is not that easy, and cannot be achieved by merely using a product topically.

Ayurveda, one of the most ancient and talked about sciences imparts age-old medicinal traditions and formulations for reducing the appearance of aging. With organic and natural products, Ayurvedic formulations and techniques have once again taken the front seat. It has hidden secrets that render a safe passage to aging, keeping the radiance in the skin intact, and opening gates to everlasting mental and physical wellness.

Let’s delve deeper and learn what Ayurveda has in store for you.

    What Is Aging?

Before getting into the aging of the skin, let’s first understand what aging means. Ageing is a combination of progressive changes our bodies go through our lifetime, which in turn reduces the ability to endure stress, increases functional impairment, and susceptibility to diseases. It is the progressive decline in the physiological functions of the body.

In Ayurvedic sciences, aging is called Jara or Vardhakya - meaning wearing out or increasing age. There are two key factors in ageing – Chronological and physiological. Chronological aging is when we age with time. This is inevitable and irreversible. The other facet is physiological aging. It is the biological perspective that refers to the degeneration of tissues and cells of our body that deteriorates the overall functioning of the body. Components such as genes, diseases, pollution, lifestyle, etc influence this aspect. Interestingly, the latter can be reversed. How? There are certain ways or methods Ayurveda imparts, that will not eliminate aging but surely delay the process.

What Is The Aging Of The Skin?

Skin is a very complex organ that transforms with time due to several factors. Like the rest of the body, skin aging is affected by sun damage, stress, genetics, ailments, pollution, etc. In terms of Ayurveda, our skin modifies as we go through the different stages of life.

    Signs Of Aging

    • Rough and textured skin
    • Fine lines and wrinkles
    • Age spots
    • Dry and dehydrated
    • Loosening and slacking of skin
    • Frequent bruises
    • Loss of elasticity with advancing age
    • Skin starts becoming translucent
    • Thinning of blood vessels

    Factors Responsible For Skin Aging

    • Lifestyle choices such as diet, physical activities, smoking, etc
    • Mental health issues, stress, anxiety
    • Sun damage due to harmful UV rays
    • Environmental pollution and extreme weather conditions
    • Underlying skin ailments and other diseases
    • Other internal triggers can be insufficient and poor blood circulation, and hormonal imbalance, among others.

Ways To Protect Skin From Aging – What Ayurveda Says

With age, the skin loses its antioxidation properties and collagen production (cell turnover or the production of new cells), and such ability further decreases when exposed to the above-mentioned factors. Therefore, it is suggested to inculcate products and methods into your skincare that promotes antioxidation and builds collagen.

Rasayana is a subject in Ayurveda that deals with and studies youthfulness and a healthy state of the body. In terms of skin, the idea is to naturally enhance immunity and dodge the maturing process. Ayurveda provides exceptional treatments to rejuvenate skin and render a radiant glow.

To determine skin health and ways to promote it, Ayurveda depends on the following three Gunas (factors):

    • Kapha (ether element): Disrupted Kapha affects the moisture balance and elasticity of the skin.

For this issue, it is advised to engage in regular oil massages, gentle cleansing and exfoliation of the skin.

    • Pitta (fire element): Poor metabolism and hormonal fluctuations mean imbalanced Pitta.

Moisturization and sun protectants are suggested when the Pitta is disturbed.

    • Vata (Air element): Vata is imbalanced when there is reduced and ineffective circulation of nutrients and blood to the different layers of the skin.

Proper nourishment to the skin and hydration is recommended for this concern.

Ayurveda depends on these gunas and curate methods to blur or delay the process of skin aging. Not going much deeper into the technicalities, let’s understand the ways we can age gracefully.

Why spend dollars on chemicals when the skin can be rejuvenated naturally with herbs? Following mentioned are some of the extremely effective herbal ingredients to prevent the ageing of the skin.

Turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful anti-ageing herb that brings out a natural glow. It entails anti-oxidants and is anti-inflammatory. It further helps in getting rid of age spots and blemishes.

Brahmi is an excellent herb for draining toxins from the body. It improves the overall complexion of the skin and promotes cell turnover and regeneration.

Ashwagandha is another component that extensively hikes cell growth and builds collagen. It also helps in the production of natural skin oils, necessary to shield the skin from external aggravating factors. In addition, it aids in relieving stress and nourishes the health of tissues in our skin.

Moringa is a potent source of Vitamin C which in turn builds collagen. This further helps in averting the sagging of skin, wrinkles and fine lines.

Guduchi is another natural ingredient that is anti-inflammatory and controls the issues related to inflamed skin and pigmentation. It is also good for our mental health and immunity.
