If you want a deeper, more restful night of sleep each night, there are a few basic habits you can follow to make that happen.
Learn what they are in the short “Energy Feed” below, or keep on reading…
Your digestion slows down in the evening hours, and your body isn’t programmed to digest a large, heavy meal in the evening or really anytime after sunset.
If you are eat a fairly large meal around 6:30 or 7:30 p.m., it’s going to take longer for your body to digest that than it would at midday. And, it’s probably not going to digest it very effectively.
That means that when you get into bed at night, your body is still working at digestion, which causes you to have sleep more lightly and restlessly or even wake throughout in the night.
To avoid this, eat a light and early dinner each night.
This doesn’t have to be an ornate sequence of activities. It can be just a few simple things that you do in the same order around the same time every night—like dimming the lights, brushing your teeth and taking a few deep, conscious breaths before your lay down.
This bedtime routine becomes your body’s cue to slow down and wind down.
To get the MOST from your night of sleep, you want to be asleep by 10 p.m. The hours between approximately 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. are your opportunity for the most rejuvenative sleep. This is the time of night when deeper, non-REM sleep is most prevalent.
In Ayurveda, we know that in this time of night, Pitta Dosha is more predominant. Pitta is fire, and fire transforms; it digests and metabolizes. This means that you’re digesting, metabolizing, assimilating, transforming not only the day’s FOOD you put into your mouth, but all the millions of other impressions you fed yourself through the eyes, ears, nose, skin, thoughts and emotions.
Rhythm is important. Our bodies are naturally programmed to run on BIORHYTHMS. Following these steps each evening around the same time is going to help you reset your body to its natural, circadian biorhythm.
