    Your skin is composed of multiple layers. The epidermis is the outermost layer and is made up of a thick mound of skin cells. The cells are generated at the bottom of the epidermis and, as they mature, are pushed towards the surface.

    The stratum corneum or the outermost part of the epidermis consists of about 30 layers of dead cells. Now you know why ‘scrubbing the skin' is a thing.

    So, till your 20s, this process is effective, and hence, your skin looked and felt lovable.

     In your 30s, new cells at the base of the epidermis form at a slower rate. This makes your skin thinner. At the same time, the dead cells are not pushed off as quickly, and instead, stack up on the skin’s surface.

    The result - your skin becomes drier, rougher, and lackluster in appearance.

    The layer below the epidermis is also known as the dermis. It includes the most important connective tissues such as collagen, elastin, and proteoglycans. This layer makes your skin strong and helps it retain moisture, making it look supple and soft.

    As you age, the dermis becomes thinner and drier as well. Its main structural proteins weaken, leaving behind patchy, thickened, and disorganized fibers.

    With time, your tissues lose their ability to retain elasticity and become saggy. Such changes also lead to wrinkles and fine lines.
