Wink out the appearance of Redness, Discoloration and Irritation
Did you know that in Ayurveda, any appearance of skin irritation is a symptom of excessive Pitta and Kapha in your body?
Ayurveda calls them ‘Kshudra Kushta’ meaning minor skin symptoms which can easily be resolved by dietary changes and at-home topical applications.
Ayurveda’s cold-pressed oils such as coconut oil, neem oil and castor oil are specifically made for this purpose. They soothe, calm and moisturize sensitive skin types and lend their coolness to the skin in order to calm it down.
All you need is 1-2 drops of any of these oils.
You can even add them to your daily face or body oils.
Promotes Longer-Looking, Lustrous Hair
All of these 5 pure, cold-pressed oils have proven their efficacy in the field of haircare centuries ago, and still continue to do so.
In fact, the secret behind Indian women’s long, shiny hair is precisely this.
Apply handfuls of your favorite pure, cold-pressed oils to your scalp and massage for about 5 mins. If you’re craving a full-on spa-like experience, you can even take handfuls of any of the oil in a bowl and warm it using the double boiler method. Warming the oil allows for better penetration into your scalp.
Make sure the oil is thoroughly applied to the roots of your hair as well as the ends. Keep it on for 30 minutes or more.
You can even keep it overnight, and wash it off the next day using a mild/herbal shampoo.
Swipe, swipe, swipe away makeup
Yes, you heard that right. No more using micellar waters or alcohol-based toners or facial cleansers that strip away your healthy skin cells along with makeup and leave you and your skin high and dry.
All you need is 2-3 drops of coconut oil, almond, moringa or castor oil on a cotton pad to wipe away remnants of makeup and dirt.
And what’s more, you won’t need to lather your face with 2-3 products more to replenish your skin’s lost moisture because these oils are super-moisturizing and promote an even-toned complexion!
Oil your Belly Button, too!
Heard of Navel Therapy? It’s an ancient, traditional Ayurvedic practice of filling the belly button with warm oil for detoxifying, nurturing and keeping diseases at bay.
Why navel? Don’t go by its size, because the Navel, in Ayurveda, is the source of everyone's life. It’s the place of our first nourishment as human beings.
The philosophy of navel therapy (also referred to as nabhi chikitsa) informs us that the navel continues to serve as a center of balance in adulthood. It is where the Nabhi Marma—a central and very powerful energy center – is located.
Some of these pure, cold-pressed oils such as Neem Oil, Almond Oil and most importantly, Castor Oil, can be used to try out this ancient, traditional Ayurvedic procedure.
Rinse or clean out your belly button and let it dry. Sit or lie down somewhere comfortable, like your bed or couch. Put a few drops of oil into your belly button and let it absorb into your skin.
Put a clean towel or sheet over your belly button so you’re not touching your belly button directly.
Gently press down on your belly button with both thumbs, or your index, middle, and ring finger all at once. If you feel any light discomfort continue pressing gently until it begins to subside (but stop if it causes pain). Press a little more firmly until it’s no longer uncomfortable to press on that area.
Move on to other areas around your belly button and stomach and repeat the steps. Stroke your stomach clockwise with your palm for about a minute.
Spruce up your life between the sheets!
As you grow older, Vata Dosha in your body increases leading to extreme dryness.
In a 2015 study, about 30% of women reported pain during their most recent sexual encounter. Using an additional lubricant can help ease the pain by decreasing friction.
While there are many different types of lubes specifically designed for this purpose, you may consider coconut oil if you want to try something natural and free of some of the chemicals found in other products.
It’s also known for its moisturizing properties, making it an especially appealing lubricant.
According to a 2014 study, coconut oil is clinically proven for safe and effective use as a moisturizer. Its moisturizing properties make the oil an effective lube.
For women going through menopause, coconut oil may be especially helpful.
Oils for Oral Health
Heard of ‘Oil Pulling’? Ayurveda truly is a unique holistic science.
Oil pulling, also known as ‘Gandusha Kriya’ is the technique of swishing an Ayurvedic oil in your mouth to ensure oral and gum health. Ayurveda believes there’s a strong correlation between your oral health and your overall health. Which is why oil pulling is a strongly recommended practice in Ayurveda.
The best oils for oil pulling are Coconut oil and Neem Oil, early morning on an empty stomach in addition to your routine oral hygiene measures such as brushing and flossing.
In a few weeks, you can notice your teeth become whiter; breath becoming fresher and oral cavity muscles and jaws becoming stronger with excellent achievement of oral hygiene.
All you need to do is swish (and not gargle or swallow) the oil in your mouth, for a period of between 5 to 15 minutes. After completing the swishing, you can spit out the oil along with the toxins.
