    • Empower the body with the strengthening effects of passive exercise

Sometimes, the solution to a problem comes as a surprise, like a friend that you weren't expecting but who arrives nevertheless, just in time to solve a problem for you in a moment.

If you feel fatigued, low on energy, suffer from dry, lacklustre skin, inflexibility, joint pain or go through weakness, there's something that can be like 'a blessing from above' but you probably never thought could help you in this way!

Even if you're trying to lose weight or are just looking for more strength and energy to go about your business every day, go through insomnia or, like a lot of us, are constantly exposed to some sort of mental or physical stress - Abhyanga is the ancient practice that'll seem to have come alive just for you!

Though an ancient tradition, ABHYANGHA is more relevant than ever to cope with modern stresses…

    What is Abhyanga?

A special daily ritual recommended by Ayurveda to empower the body’s healing system and to promote overall wellness, Abhyanga, most simply understood, is a full body massage with oil.

Ayurveda believes that growing up is a process of dehydration - as we age, not only do we need to keep our diet enriched with hydrating elements, we also need to practice daily oleation to maintain optimum levels of unctuousness in the body, support proper circulation and keep the lymph moving.

The same Abhyanga can become even more effective when Ayurvedic secrets from the Himalayan traditions are added - the results are dramatic!

We’ll tell you more about it, but before that, here are a few things you would like to know:

ABHYANGA is CLASSICALLY RECOMMENDED for MANY PROBLEMS for BOTH MIND and BODY such as when we:

    • have a Vata disorder (that’s whenever we are cold, dry, tired, anxious, or just plain exhausted)
    • are too thirsty
    • have dry skin, hair and nails
    • feel physically weak
    • have joint pain
    • suffer from insomnia and some kind of mental stress or imbalance
    • prior to carrying out the detox therapy of ‘PANCHAKARMA’; the five deeply cleansing actions administered by an Ayurvedic Physician.

If we were to look at the benefits of regular abhyanga from Ashtanga Hridayam, Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita, the three great classic texts of Ayurveda, this is what we’d find:

    • 1. Increased circulation
    • 2. Improved elimination of impurities from the body
    • 3. Better nourishment delivered to the whole body
    • 4. Increased levels of stamina through the day
    • 5. Movement of lymph, aid in detoxification of all the tissues
    • 6. Reduced body fatigue and exhaustion
    • 7. Better ability to handle strenuous physical work and avoid injury or stiffness after exercise
    • 8. Promotes sturdiness of the body by toning the muscles and connective tissues which gives vigor to the the muscles and dhatus (tissues) of the body. It is considered to be passive exercise
    • 9. Imparts firmness to the limbs
    • 10. Stimulates the nervous system and the internal organs of the body
    • 11. Stimulates antibody production which boosts the immune system
    • 12. Calming for the nerves and provides better sensory and motor integration
    • 13. Lubricates the joints giving greater flexibility
    • 14. It controls Vata (Vata vitiation/aggravation can influence neurological diseases)
    • 15. Gives longevity, pushing and correcting the effects of aging
    • 16. Keeps the body trim and less likely to gain excessive weight because it helps balance appetite and supports digestion
    • 17. Stimulates antibody production which boosts the immune system
    • 18. Oil is a major anti-oxidant and is bacteriostatic so its regular application discourages growth of germs, bacteria, fungi, viruses, scavenges and free radicals

But is there a technique to it?

Of course there is, as prescribed in the texts, as practiced for centuries and as explored by practitioners -

However, today, we bring to you a very special, advanced version of Abhyanga that not only follows the protocols from the ancient Ayurvedic texts but also includes secrets from the Himalayan Ayurvedic tradition: Himalayan Mountain Abhyanga

A signature technique of world renowned practitioners Robert and Melanie Sachs, the pioneers of the American spa industry in America, this is a very unique and effective, immediate-results oriented protocol.

    WHAT STUDIES REVEAL:

Clinical studies also show that massage may be effective for a wide range of health problems, including:

Autism: Autistic children, who usually don't like being touched, show less autistic behavior and are more social and attentive after receiving massage therapy from their parents.

Atopic dermatitis/eczema: Children with this scaly, itchy skin problem seem to
experience less redness, scaling, and other symptoms if receiving massage between flares. Massage should not be used when this skin condition is actively inflamed.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): Massage may improve mood in children with ADHD and help them feel less fidgety and hyperactive.

Bulimia: Studies show that adolescents with this eating disorder feel less depressed and anxious after receiving massage therapy.

Cystic fibrosis: Massage may reduce anxiety and improve respiration in children with this lung condition.

Diabetes: Massage may help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce anxiety and depression in children with diabetes.

Rheumatoid arthritis: Children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) have been shown to experience less pain, morning stiffness, and anxiety as a result of massage therapy.

Labor: Studies suggest that massage helps reduce anxiety during labor.

A bonus: Massage increases oxytocin, a hormone known to facilitate bonding.

Multiple Sclerosis: Studies suggest massage is more effective than exercise in reducing the frequency and severity of MS symptoms, including fatigue, pain, spasticity and quality of life.

    DID YOU KNOW?

    1. Snehana or rubbing oil into the body with well-meaning and compassionate strokes is a part of Abhyanga. ‘Sneha’, a Sanskrit word, can be translated to both ‘love’ and ‘oil’.
This is significant because it is believed that the result of Abhyanga is the same as the warmth and stability one experiences when showered with love.

    2. ‘Good touch’ and massage are believed to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers.

    3. A whole session of Abhyanga is supposed to be as beneficial for the body as 7-8 hours of deep sleep.

    4. Oil massage is thought of as the oldest form of medical care in many cultures. Even Egyptian tomb paintings show people being oil massaged.

    5. Ayurveda says that warming the body and oiling it makes the oil capable of travelling all the way through the skin, the connective tissues, the muscles and the organs, until it finds its way to the linings of the hollow organs which it coats, allowing the toxins and morbid material to be freed and to slide out of the body leaving these linings clean and refreshed.

    6. While oil is used in other massages to reduce friction and allow smooth movement, Abhyanga gives a lot more importance to oil. Abhyanga movements are designed to drive the oil into the skin for therapeutic effects and not just for lubrication.
