We asked our qualified Ayurvedic practitioners with over 20 years of experience if they could share some expert insights on what more you can do for healthy eyes, particularly if puffiness and dark circles are a problem, and this is what they told us:

Puffy Eyes

The skin just below your eyes is very thin and highly sensitive to fluid compartmentalization. Seasonal allergies, sinus infections, crying, or water retention from high blood pressure or consumption of excessive salt are some of the reasons the loose, thin under-eye skin becomes puffy. According to Ayurveda, this condition indicates an excess of Kapha. Here are some tips from our Ayurvedic practitioners that can help you tackle puffy eyes better: 

• Deal with seasonal allergies effectively with herbs like tulsi, turmeric and ginger under consultation of a practitioner.
• Switch your sleep position. Avoid sleeping on the sides and try to sleep on your back.
• Avoid rubbing eyes frequently, going to bed with makeup on and harsh cleansers.
• Hypothyroid, cardiovascular or kidney problems can cause under-eye fluid retention. So, get yourself checked by your primary care practitioner to rule out these conditions.
• Place slices of cucumbers, potato and apples, chilled tea bags, or even a package of frozen peas on eyes. This can constrict leaky blood vessels and lessen the puffiness.
• Avoid extra salt in your diet.
• Do regular exercise and maintain ideal weight if possible as per your age.
• Avoid day-time sleeping and taking too much of yogurt and other dairy products. 
• A self-massage around the eyes using your fingers or a massage tool can be helpful. 

Periorbital hyperpigmentation
(dark circles) 

Genetics, rubbing, and inflammatory skin diseases such as eczema may play a role in exacerbating the pigmentation of the thin under-eye skin. Ayurveda believes that dark circles are indicative of a Vata and Pitta imbalance. Here are some tips: 

• Kick start your day with a cup of warm tulsi tea 
• Take blood cleansers like Manjishta off and on as per the advice of an Ayurvedic practitioner.        
• Have a nutrient dense Vata-Pitta balancing diet.
• Do not rub your eyes.
• Do not use chemical based cosmetics.
• Under-eye herb-based preparations that balance Vata and Pitta may be useful if used regularly for a substantial period.
• Sleep well and sleep on time. No late nights.
• Avoid dieting and rapid weight loss.
• Keep your bowels clean.
• Hydrate the body adequately through enough fluid intake.
• Do yoga and meditation to be in a state of bliss.
• A self-massage around the eyes using your fingers or a massage tool can be helpful.
