5 Ayurvedic Hacks for those puffy, dark, wrinkled under-eyes
that can make or break your look!
What does Ayurveda say about eye health?
Intensive eye health has always been a part of Ayurveda’s 5,000-year-old holistic Health and Wellness Science.
‘Shalakhya Tantra’ - one of the eight parts of Ayurveda talks about
importance of eye care and ways to effectively carry it out. As a matter of fact,
multiple fields of modern beauty and lifestyle world have drawn inspiration from these tenets of Ayurveda.
Increase in screen time, endless Zoom calls, poor sleeping practices and virtual parties thanks to the unending lockdown, have rendered your under-eye skin dry, withered and saggy looking.
However, a
holistic Ayurvedic self-massage takes the cake when it comes to a wholesome daily eye care ritual.
Did you know about the
4 vital hidden energy points that envelope your eyes called
Marmas that when massaged correctly helps tone and relax the muscles around your eyes?
Not just that, these points are also the channels that carry light energy in!
Using an
under-eye emollient with high moisturizing powers would doubly amplify the results.
You see the hollow of your temples? Take your finger there. That is your
Shankha Marma. Massage these two points for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, gently in circular, clockwise motions, one side after the other.
This Marma point is known to
relieve stress, headache and improve circulation in that area, which helps
soften the look of crow’s lines and
wrinkles that seem to appear there.
Feel the bony edges below and above your pupil. Move your finger to the edge near the corner of your eye. Use your finger slightly like a little hook, as if you were to pull away, your finger would stay there. That point is the
Apanga Marma.
(Confused? Follow the illustration)
Massage these points gently in circular, clockwise motions. Continue doing this for 30 seconds or a minute. Make sure the pressure is not deep into the eye socket or towards the eye. It’s important that the pressure is slightly on the inside surface of that bony orbit of the eye.
Apanga Marma is your go-to to
improve perception and vision. Massaging this point increase
circulation around the eyes and
brings more moisture to the area around your eyes.
Next are a series of minor Marmas located along the bony orbit of your eyes, starting from the center of each eyebrow. These points are your
Avarta Marmas.
Massaging these points
open up your mind and your sense and
increase your focus. They are also good for
improving the look of those dark circles around your eyes.
Complementing your daily massage routine with
a cooling, Ayurvedic eye gel takes care of the thin and sensitive skin around the eyes throughout the day .
One with the goodness of Tulsi and Aloe Vera helps keep the under-eye skin revitalized, nourished and refreshed.
Now, with your finger, locate the middle point in between both your eyebrows, precisely at a right angle to the bridge of your nose. This point is called the
Sthapani Marma and is also known as
‘The Third Eye’
Massage this point gently like the others with one of your fingers, in clockwise, circular motion.
This point
calms and soothes the mind and senses and
controls the overall skin complexion. Relieving the mind of stress and tension is an important factor in improving the overall sunken look of your eyes.
You can, in fact, practice this technique 5-6 times a day.
Running short on time?
And perhaps, this is the simplest thing that you can do each night. This ancient yogic remedy does not require any additional paraphernalia.
All you need to do is sit comfortably, rub the palm of your hands together for 10 seconds. Avoid rubbing your hands if it’s hot outside, or your eyes are burning, and instead use cold, cotton pads on the palms. Close your eyes and gently cup your hands over them. Block out the light without exerting pressure on your eyes.
Take smooth, deep breaths and stay in that position for the next 5-10 minutes.
The palming technique relieves your eyes of all the strain they have taken throughout the day. It provides warmth and comfort to your dull, tired eyes, which in turn soothes your under-eye muscles and smoothens the look of those crow’s feet and wrinkles.
This little root packs a punch to help
lighten the look of dark spots. With the
combination of brightening and soothing benefits that it holds in, Licorice makes the ideal skincare ingredient to be used around the eyes.
All you need to do is mix one tablespoon of Licorice root powder in some milk in a bowl to create a paste-like consistency. Mix it thoroughly. Apply this pack to your under-eye skin.
Mainly apply it to your dark-circle prone area. Keep it for 20 mins and wash it off with cold water.
Make sure you apply
a completely natural, Ayurvedic under-eye moisturizer, preferably with Ghee in it, to skin around your eyes to keep it from drying out.
Triphala meaning “3 fruits” in Sanskrit is a blend of 3 Ayurvedic herbs – Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Haritaki (Chebulic Myrobalan) and Bibhitaki (Terminalia Bellirica).
The combination of these 3 herbs is extensively used in Ayurveda when it comes to hair care, body care and most importantly, Eye care and is endowed with many nutritional benefits such as Vitamins, Carbohydrates, Sodium, Gallic Acid, Dietary Fibers, Minerals, Chebulinic Acid, Chebulagic Acid and many others. It has also been proven that the administration of Triphala to your eyes
helps in reducing redness, inflammation and stress.
Triphala is commonly
found in 3 forms in most of the stores around you – Triphala powder, Triphala tablets and Triphala supplements.
For preparing a Triphala eye wash, all you need to do is mix a tablespoon of organic Triphala powder with hot, boiling water. The heat of the water will help the powder dissolve and compounds in it to break down.
Allow it to cool and strain the mixture through a fine cloth. Take another piece of clean cloth, dip it in the mixture and place it over your eyes.
The best time to do practice this is before you go to sleep, so that your eyes get enough rest and relaxation after the process.
Make sure you blink your eyes so that your eyes can come in direct contact with the wash.
Continue doing this for the next 5 minutes.
