Sexual health as per Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the science of life and since sexual health is an integral part of our life, the 5000-year-old science covers several aspects related to it. According to Ayurvedic texts, a man looking for pleasure should recourse to Vajikaran

Vajikarana, or Vrishya chikitsa, is a part of Ayurveda that talks about aphrodisiacs, virility, sexual excitement, managing the health of sexual or reproductive organs, etc. It suggests that, by resorting to Vajikaran, a man can please their partners, which would nourish their body. Ayurvedic texts further mention how using aphrodisiac products like black gram can help deal with sexual problems and enhance a person's sex life.

A study indicated that around 43% of women and 31% of men suffer from various sexual dysfunctions2. However, in most cases, it is not an irreversible problem. Nature has blessed us with natural products and ingredients that can help improve sexual drive, arousal, pleasure, and performance and deal with sexual dysfunctions.

Ayurvedic texts make mention of several natural aphrodisiacs that can help improve sexual health, sexual drive, stamina, and sexual dysfunctions. These include bananas, pomegranates, figs, honey, black gram, etc.

Black gram and sexual wellness

Black gram or black lentil, also known as urad dal, is loaded with properties that have far-reaching benefits. It is recognized as samidhanya, the type of food considered wholesome according to the Ayurvedic diet. However, a lesser-known fact is that black gram is an Ayurveda-recognized aphrodisiac loaded with the potential abilities to improve sexual drive, sperm count, and other sexual dysfunctions.

According to Ayurveda, the Shukrala property (property to increase sperm count and improve quality) and Sthanyo (property to enhance breast milk production) can help both male and females to support their sexual and reproductive health. Interestingly, black gram offers different effects depending on the gender of the user. So, if you want to explore how the humble urad dal can help you and your partner, read ahead:

Ayurvedic benefits of black gram for males

Sexual dysfunctions have become very common. These include loss of libido, poor sperm count, sperm mobility, erectile dysfunction (impotence), and premature ejaculation. These complications can severely affect a person's sexual health and well-being.

Ayurvedic texts suggest that black gram has the potential to help males deal with almost all of the above conditions in a natural manner. Ayurvedic texts attribute the Shukrala property (the property to increase sperm count and improve quality) and Vajikarana (aphrodisiac) property to the black gram. It is also used in the preparation of Madana Kameswari Lehyam, an Ayurvedic medicine used in the aphrodisiac treatment. Madana Kameswari Lehyam, made using black gram, can help males improve sperm count and quality, enhance libido, and maintain virility.

Research3 has highlighted that the high concentration of potassium and phosphorus in black gram can play a vital role in enhancing blood flow to the genitalia. This natural boost can help a male who is struggling with arousal-related problems. Additionally, the presence of manganese and potassium can help balance estrogen and progesterone levels in the body.

Several latest research claims4 support the claim that erectile dysfunction is often linked with zinc deficiency. Black gram, a rich source of zinc, can help boost sexual health by balancing healthy testosterone levels and reducing the chances of developing erectile dysfunction.

Thus, according to the latest research and ayurvedic recommendations, black gram or urad dal can offer a wide range of benefits that include improved sperm count and quality, enhanced libido, and improvement in erectile dysfunction. While there are several chemical-based medications that claim to offer great relief, not all of them are effective and may expose the body to harmful and harsh chemicals.

Ayurvedic benefits of black gram for females

Female sexual health and black gram have a long history. The lentil not only enhances the sexual health of female but caters to their menstrual and reproductive health, which is directly linked to their sexual health.

Black gram has unique properties which affect males and females differently. However, one benefit that it has to offer to both users, irrespective of gender, is the potential energy boost. Due to iron deficiency and low hemoglobin5, many females and males suffer from fatigue and low energy levels, which can have consequences for their sexual health. Black Gram contains high levels of diverse minerals, including iron. Thus it can help reduce exhaustion and fatigue. Therefore, consuming black gram is associated with a boost of stamina, which is vital for sexual health and well-being.

Apart from this, black gram intake can help them manage and deal with muscle cramps, primary amenorrhea (missing one or more menstrual periods), and dysmenorrhea (severe and frequent menstrual cramps and pain). Furthermore, Ayurveda suggests that consuming meals containing black gram can help regularize the menstrual cycle and address the problem of the irregular menstrual cycle. Additionally, the presence of manganese and potassium can help balance estrogen and progesterone levels in the body.

Furthermore, It has been a general practice amongst females in traditional Indian setups to consume black-gram-infused products to improve their strength and enhance milk secretion. . This is so because, Ayurveda attributes Sthanyo property (property to enhance breast milk production) to the black gram, which can help increase milk secretion in lactating mothers6. Thus, based on ayurvedic wisdom and modern research, black gram can be an excellent dietary addition for lactating mothers7.

Ways to consume/apply black gram as per Ayurveda

Some Ayurveda-approved ways in which a person can introduce black gram to their routine include:

Ayurvedic experts suggest consuming 1-2 tablespoons of urad dal to maintain good sexual health in males. Take 1-2 teaspoons of black gram, mix it with 1-2 glasses of milk, and heat it until the dal absorbs the milk. For better taste, one can add honey to it. Having it in breakfast can potentially help in improving sexual health.

Ayurvedic experts also recommend females consume roasted black gram mixed with jaggery powder to maintain their menstrual, sexual and reproductive health.

Black gram has potential properties that most of us fail to appreciate. It is not just a regular lentil but has properties that can boost and improve sexual and reproductive health. Ayurveda, recommends using a wholesome ingredient like black gram for its potential abilities. So whether you are male or female, add black gram to your routine as it contains properties that can support your sexual and reproductive health. Many of these are rooted in Ayurveda and are backed by scientific research.
