  • Rarely discussed causes for darkening of the skin around the eyes
and 5 natural ways to address them

Imagine you are someone who has always been surrounded by books. Your glasses have grown up as have you - changing styles, shapes, and colors. The one thing that hasn’t changed, though, is that smudged kohl look you’ve sported all these years. The funny thing is, you don’t even wear kohl. It’s just dark circles.Your college friends used to remark on them. And now it’s your colleagues – but it’s always the same: Didn’t you get enough sleep last night?’ ‘Are you feeling okay?’ ‘Have you tried using makeup’?

(And you, used to all of these and more, just remind them that your dark circles are here to stay and mask your own irritation by telling yourself that you are okay with them.)

Imagine you have had a wonderful summer. Your tan is even. Your hair looks brilliant. Your cheeks have a sun-kissed glow. But then you notice that your eyes are surrounded by an odd hyperpigmentation – like they were given extra sunlight during your tanning time. You try putting ice on them. You remember to destress your eyes with cucumber slices every evening. But the hyperpigmentation remains!

(You just shrug at this pesky little change on your face and try not to think about it too much.)

Imagine it's the evening of an important office event. You have the perfect little black dress on. Your hair is done and you’re putting on makeup. You get your winged eye in just one swipe of the eye liner.
But then you see a shadow under your eye. You try to fix it; you dab a little more concealer, but it only makes it seem baggier.

(You accept that this is just how it is and try to focus on the rest of your face.)

Dark circles under the eyes – something a vast majority of us have experienced at one point or another in our lives – are never independently occurring phenomena. More importantly, it is never topical. However, because the appearance of your face changes so often (even if in minor ways), you may not notice how, over time, the shadows under your eyes turn into dark circles that ultimately become part of your face.

Under-eye darkening of the skin is fairly common. But if you look closely, dark under-eye skin is often accompanied by darkening of the lower eyelids too. Some other conditions, such as puffiness (eyebags), fine lines around the corners of the eyes and a darker hue near the bridge of your nose are also clubbed under the umbrella term ‘dark circles’. Really, 'dark circles' are called as such because they cover the entirety of the eye area, and not just the under-eye skin! Hence the word 'circle'. What you are in fact talking about is 'periorbital darkening' of the skin around the eyes. In other words, the orbit of the eye and its peripheral region appear darkened or discolored.

Now, the periorbital skin darkening may or may not be something you worry about. It can be a nuisance for some and a real issue for others.

Today, beauty is no longer defined by perfection; instead, it celebrates every feature and imperfection for its uniqueness.

However, if you do have dark circles and are not a fan, it is understandable that you worry about hiding them; it may even force you to think about more permanent procedures to get rid of the under-eye darkening. It’s also a pesky little thing that makes people remark on your looks, and that can get a bit annoying, can’t it? Because no matter what you say, it won’t erase the force of the truth that your under-eye circles are noticeable and that they tend to be noticeable. Read on below if some of this already sounds familiar to you. Because while periorbital dark circles can appear for a range of reasons, today, we have the science and the wisdom to combat them. Let’s first understand ‘dark circles’ a little better.

    Who gets dark circles?

In a word – everyone. It is a great myth that only women of a certain age are susceptible to under-eye darkening. Men and women, and even young adults, can and do develop dark circles around the eyes if their inner well-being is compromised.

Commonly attributed to ‘lack of sleep’, dark circles actually occur for different reasons in different people.

Before we explore the causes for this physical change, something important to remember is that dark circles are not a medical condition in themselves and do not represent the need for medical intervention.

    What causes dark under-eye circles?

Several reasons and underlying causes lead to darkening of the skin around the eyes. Here are ten causes that resound with most sufferers:

    1. Age

    2. Fatigue

    3. Allergies

    4. Stress

    5. Dehydration

    6. Overexposure to the sun

    7. Anemia

    8. Sleep Deprivation

    9. Poor diet

    10. Smoking and alcohol consumption

    11. Genetics

    12. Some health conditions

    Glucose

    1. Age

Aging for the skin means thinning, losing elasticity, and producing less and less collagen. With age, the darker blood vessels under the skin start to show more, and this turns into a shadow-like darkening of the under-eye area.

    2. Fatigue and eye strain

At times, extreme exhaustion and tiredness cause darkening of the delicate skin around the eyes and even the mouth. Similarly, excessive straining of the eyes caused by increased screen time leads to enlargement of the blood vessels around the eyes, ultimately creating dark under-eye circles.

    3. Allergies

While not usually associated with the eyes, allergies can, in fact, trigger dark circles in many people. If your allergy symptoms include itchy eyes, redness, and dilated blood vessels, then chances are that every allergy attack will also cause your under-eye skin to puff up and likely darken over time.

    4. Dehydration

As is the case for the rest of our body, hydration affects our eyes and the delicate under-eye skin as well. When the body loses essential moisture, it fights to preserve whatever it has left. This causes water retention, bloating, and puffing in several areas of the body, including the face. If you face frequent symptoms such as these, you might want to take a look at how much water you intake on a daily basis.

    Glucose

    5. Overexposure to the sun

Commonly loved for its tanning effects, something we don’t think about is how the harsh rays of the sun impact our eyes. Too much sun causes excess production of melanin. When produced in high amounts (which the body does not need), melanin leads to deeper pigmentation of the most affected skin, such as the skin around the eyes. So those stylish sunglasses are not just good to complete your look; they’re essential for protecting your eyes!

    6. Anemia

This should not come as a surprise, but you would be amazed to learn how often it is forgotten when looking for reasons for dark circles. If you have lower levels of red blood cells, it is also possible that you develop patches of pale or even dark skin around the eyes, mouth, and knuckles. Time to check your iron intake and your overall diet.

    Glucose
    Glucose

    7. Poor diet

What you put into your body eventually decides how you will feel on the inside and look on the outside. So, it makes sense that a body deprived of essential fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients will develop hyperpigmentation, skin darkening and loss of elasticity. One of the outcomes of poor nutrition is also dark circles around the eyes.

    8. Smoking and alcohol consumption

People who smoke regularly are also prone to suffering from sleep deprivation. Because cigarettes contain nicotine, smokers experience a nicotine stimulant effect that not only messes with their sleep cycle but also directly affects their skin, causing it to age prematurely. Similarly, frequent and excessive alcohol consumption leads to dehydration and of course, premature aging of the skin, both of which will show up as dark shadows under the eyes.

Remember, even if you are not a smoker, second-hand smoke is equally harmful to your skin! You might not inhale the smoke, but it settles on your skin, affecting the topical protective layers and breaking down skin barriers, ultimately causing dryness, patchiness, and darkening.

    Glucose
    Glucose

    9. Genetics

Of course, with time and some lifestyle and skincare changes, your dark circles may reduce or lighten. But if you find that you are doing everything right, but the shadows under your eyes remain, then dark circles could be running in the family.

    10. Stress

Just like it is mentioned above about poor diet, for the delicate skin around the eyes and mouth, it is doubly true that what you feel on the inside shows up on the outside. Stress is a leading cause for many major health issues in all age groups. But what it also does is cause changes in physical appearance. Dark undereye skin is one of the impacts of long term stress.

    Glucose
    Glucose

    11. Sleep Deprivation

Lack of sleep, especially for a prolonged period of time may result in stretching out and irritating the folds of the skin under your eyes, giving them a sallow, sunken appearance.

    12. Some health conditions

As stated earlier, while dark under-eye skin or periorbital darkening in itself is no cause for alarm, if they are caused by underlying health issues, it might be a good idea to do some investigation and identify the root of this condition. In such cases, there may be other concerns cropping up along with the dark circles.

    Glucose

    HOLD ON.

There is one more truth about dark circles that we often forget or overlook - complexion and skin tone differences.

    DID YOU KNOW
All skin tones and complexions reflect color differently. That’s why bright colors give lighter and darker hues on different skin tones! If you are light-skinned, those darker purplish hues under your eyes are blood vessels that are too visible. If you have a darker complexion, the slightly darker tone under your eyes results from more melanin concentration in the delicate folds of skin in that area. These aren’t even dark circles! So, instead of despairing, you just need to nourish, hydrate, and massage the skin around your eyes to maintain its elasticity and health!

And, if you DO have dark circles and your everyday topical eye cream is just not cutting it, you may need to look at some more effective alternatives.

    So, what can you do?

You might be thinking, ‘I never knew dark circles could indicate so many underlying issues!’ But deeper knowledge is a good thing, especially when it leads to you making better decisions for your well-being. So, now that you know what can cause periorbital dark circles, you can focus on how to combat them and improve upon what you already have! For this, we turn to the ancient science of health and wellness, scripted by nature experts and handed down over centuries and centuries to us, the modern citizens of the world: Ayurveda.

More than 5000 years ago, healers and medicos learned the secrets of nature and devised ways to implement those lessons into methods of well-being for all. From Ayurvedic texts, we learn that there are three types of body formations that consequently experience three major groups of issues (doshas); these give us the reason why a certain person may experience, say, dark circles more than others

The Three Body Types According To Ayurveda

    Pitta

Pitta (consists of the elements of fire and water and is associated with heat, sharpness, and determination)

    Vatta

Vata (consists of the elements of air and space and is associated with dryness, lightness, alertness, and creativity

    Kapha

Kapha (consists of the elements of earth and water and is associated with oiliness, juiciness, and heaviness

According to Ayurveda, dark circles are brought about by an aggravated vata imbalance. A body governed by vata will likely have dry skin, prematurely aging skin and sagging skin. A body that falls under this category will be more likely to experience dehydration, constipation, and bloating, among other telltale signs.

On the other hand, an imbalance in the Pitta body type is typically marked by hot flushes, excessive thirst and hunger, and a burning sensation in various body parts, which can also lead to darkening of the skin under the eyes and on the sides of the face. According to Ayurveda, consuming food that is rich in fatty acids and salt and also going through a period of extreme stress can lead to a pitta imbalance. In order to address the imbalance, Ayurveda advises a combination of lifestyle changes, positive practices, and some herbal and natural solutions.

Some commonly known and practiced ideas for under-eye dark circles are:

    Improved visual performance

    1. Self-massage for circulation

A soothing abhyanga or massage around the eyes. Abhyanga refers to self-massage with purpose. By pressing the key points on and around the eyes, you help improve circulation, energize the nerves around the eyes, and relax tense muscles.

This practice also helps ease the enlarged blood vessels into their stable state, which can help reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles.

    stress and mood support

    2. Striking an internal balance

A balanced diet and a balanced lifestyle. Creating little moments of balance can do wonders for your outward appearance. If you have been noticing excessive screen time lately, cut back on the needless scrolling and give your eyes a well-deserved break.

Ayurveda says that even closing your eyes and sitting in a quiet place for a few minutes can help restore internal balance and reduce stress. Stress reduction directly leads to brightening of the eyes and the face.

    3. Sleep quality

    3. Inviting Manjistha into your life

Include Manjistha, a herbal wonder for the skin and the eyes, in your life in some way. Manjistha is known as an herbal warrior in Ayurveda.

Great for your overall well-being, this incredibly potent herb can become a great friend to your skin, especially your eyes, and can help you reduce the appearance the dark circles and under-eye shadows. Manjistha is both consumed and applied. It has an array of proven benefits. For concerns regarding topical skin, Manjistha is truly a fast friend when used correctly and in the right format.

    4. Enhanced bioavailability

    4. Using Aloe Vera regularly

Use pure Aloe Vera to cool and soothe the skin under the eyes and infuse the delicate folds with hydration and moisture. Aloe Vera is rich in aloesin and aloin, which fight the signs of ageing and hydrate the skin under the eyes to make it appear lighter and healthier. This rich plant also protects the delicate skin under the eyes to help minimize further damage and maintain elasticity.

    Improved visual performance

    5. Utilizing in a new natural ingredient

Introduce Sacred Lotus Seed Extract to your eyecare routine to obtain lighter, brighter, and tighter-looking skin over time. Lotus is that flower that keeps on giving; every portion of this powerful herb is filled with potent skincare ingredients. Lotus seed extract is known for its restorative properties and helps brighten the undereye skin for a more even-toned look.

These rituals and natural treatments can aid in improving your whole periorbital skin darkening issue. However, it can be tricky to identify which herb to take and what quantity to use safely and without side effects. This is why it is always better to rely on an established Ayurvedic name that cares for the environment, cares for nature and cares, more specifically, for you.

Don’t you wish you had something that could give you the right amount of all these Ayurvedic ingredients without the hassle of measuring and mixing? How about something that not just uses nature’s best resources but combines them with modern wellness science’s proven ingredients to every undereye dark circle issue known today? For the busy modern individual, it can be a true blessing to find something that is easy to carry, easy to apply and easy to obtain with the added advantage of it being risk-free. Sometimes, especially when it comes to Ayurveda, if something is too good to be true, it’s still true. And you just need to receive it with open arms and faith in this renowned ancient wisdom.

The Ayurveda Experience brings to you a carefully curated source of Manjistha, Sacred Lotus Seed Extract, Aloe Vera, and Sunflower Seed Wax, along with scientifically proven modern ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide, and Shea butter, taking away all the work of collecting, measuring, and identifying the right ingredients and giving you something that works... and works well.

What is a ‘Periorbital Eyemulsion’? The name says it all! Rufolia works on the periorbital (the skin surrounding the eye) area.

This modern Ayurvedic formulation is not just another undereye cream. Meant to be used on the entire periorbital region, it works on the eyelids, the corners of the eyes and the undereye areas, giving you complete, periorbital care.

As shown in the image on the right, the ideal way to apply your light, brightening eyemulsion is by following the 3C pattern.

Just apply 3 dots in these 3 strategic places:

    • Under the Eyes
    • In the ‘Crow’s Feet Region’
    • On top of the eyelid

And then gently massage in a C-pattern from bottom to top, gently going upwards and blending the soothing softness of this light emulsion into the skin around your eyes.

An Ayurvedic way to apply Rufolia, these three dots help you place your fingers on the pressure points around your eyes. Using this self-massage technique is the optimal way to let Rufolia absorb and work its magic on the entire periorbital region of your eyes..

"All the of the facial products, along with those for my joints and feet smell, amazing. But here there's a difference because the scents seem to come with their own history. .. a history heavy with an ancient wisdom that I can bring to my physical needs today. I see and receive results and benefits quickly. And they feel so good on my skin. My skin welcomes the oils and mix of ingredients being offered to it. It's as if these products carry an inner wisdom which the body is acutely aware of and wants to drink in as soon as they touch the skin....They are gentle and powerful and I know no harm is being done to my body inside or out because of the purity of the ingredients which have more than met the test of time...I will end by saying the Support Staff has always more than exceeded my best expectations of what customer support should give. They are kind, knowledgeable, caring and have always taken care of any product or order questions quickly. I am extremely happy to have found their company - a company of integrity and compassion."
