Estrogen: Less estrogen makes you prone to thinning, sagging, and wrinkling. That’s right! Estrogen levels, specifically 17β-estradiol, start to decline in women as early as 35 years. By 45, estrogen levels fluctuate until they are depleted at menopause, usually around age 51 in the USA. This gradual decline leads to skin thinning, folds, and the appearance of wrinkles in the dermal layer. This is further aggravated by sun exposure, environmental stressors and smoking.  

Sebum: The primary function of sebum is to protect your skin and hair from moisture loss or dryness. The sebaceous glands (found around hair follicles), create and secrete sebum, the natural oil made up of fat molecules (lipids) like cholesterol, fatty acids, glycerides, squalene and wax. This forms a protective layer on your skin that retains and locks in moisture.

Sebum production is at its peak during adolescence, and gradually declines with age starting after menopause and well into your 60s, and 70s. This decline in sebum production causes dry, itchy, shriveled skin. 

Collagen: Collagen is the main protein structure of various connective tissues like bones, cartilage and skin. As we age, the enzymes that help process collagen decline, and fewer fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) and blood vessels are present in the skin. This leads to a reduction in collagen production and blood flow to the skin, resulting in decreased skin elasticity and the formation of wrinkles. Eventually, the overall quality of the skin decreases, causing it to become more dehydrated, less elastic, and thinner.
