Long work hours? Baby? House? Friends – I could manage it all...
But now, every passing month seems like a year lost. It feels like I’m inching closer to the end faster and faster... like how speed accelerates in a fall just as you reach closer to the ground....
Getting up from the bed – a struggle, getting dressed – uh... reflection in the mirror – something is off... offer...offest... I was on autopilot.... and yet...it seemed like I could no longer control anything...
But in REAL life, this narrative wasn’t as dramatic. Days were swallowed by chores nonetheless, and life was going on. Life was good. On the outside. Like a sadly baked cake slowly falls in the middle after its glorious rise in the oven, something inside me would slowly sink inside, a little bit, every day.
And then, something strange happened. Something extremely usual and normal in our country, did something extraordinary for me.
It woke something up inside me.
I was at Wholefoods picking up this week’s groceries (I prefer weekly, fresh food makes me feel more alive, you know?) and as I was pulling out a cart, I noticed a woman looking at my face. Of course, I thought nothing of it, and continued with my shopping. When I crossed the dairy products’ aisle, I saw her again, this time, face to face. I gave a small smile, and she a big one and then proceeded to say, “Would you mind telling me what product you’ve used on your face, I just cannot help but admire how soft and glowy your skin looks!?”
Now, as I write this, I roll my eyes, feeling embarrassed of having written a corny commercial. But at that time, I was caught by surprise, and was surprised at my surprise. Perhaps, somewhere I’d started believing I didn’t deserve compliments.
