“My skin is aging and ordinary creams and serums seem no longer effective on its dullness and uneven tone. What should I do?”
Promises that claim to repair wrinkles, fade sun spots or hyperpigmentation, or to magically make large pores disappear can leave all of us wanting, needing that shiny new product.
But we’ve seen it all... for decades, since our 20s,
we’ve seen hundreds of brands and
thousands of skincare ads. Celebrity endorsements, the next “big thing” in skincare, dermatologist-approved, even DNA-altering scientifically developed formulations.
And yet...
None of them seem to deliver what they promise.
Sure, those fancy creams might work for a 25-year-old who needs some help with a couple of pimples.
But for our mature skin that has gone through years of:
... it seems like ordinary creams and serum are no longer effective.
As we age, our skin loses the ability to renew itself (collagen) and its bounce (elasticity), and after 40, 50 or 60 years, we can’t expect our skin to look as firm, tight and taut as it did in our 20s.
Or can we?
If you’ve ever heard of Ayurveda (the Ancient Science of Life that originated in India over 5000 years ago), you’ll know that this holistic system of medicine has a large focus on self-care and
rejuvenation.
Many routines and practices in Ayurveda are made specifically to keep our skin looking and feeling young – and
what makes Ayurveda so special is that it actually focuses on long-term, sustainable results rather than short-term effects.
The earliest mentions of Ayurveda in ancient books and texts date back to over 5000 years ago. So the Ayurvedic self-care routines and formulations we know today, have been around for literally thousands of years. If the test of time doesn’t prove how effective they are... well, what does?!
So according to Ayurveda, here aRE 5 UNDENIABLE REASONS WHY YOUR ORDINARY CREAMS AND LOTIONS NO LONGER WORK ON DULLNESS AND UNEVEN SKIN TONE OF MATURE, AGING SKIN:
1. Products Are Focused On Only 1 Skin ‘Problem’ And
Don’t Focus On The ENTIRE Skin’s Health & Microbiome
Have a look at what the top 3 bestselling "anti-aging" products in the market today "promise" to do:
"With anti-aging retinol to repair wrinkles!"
"With hyaluronic acid for surface skin cell turnover and regeneration!"
"With vitamin C to deliver 2x brighter skin in just 28 days!"
But such products are only focused on addressing 1 skin problem or 'imbalance', and not the long-term health of our skin.
Ayurveda has a refreshing
explanation for these skin imbalances.
Ayurveda recognizes that there are 5 elements in nature:
Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Space.
These elements make up 3 ‘doshas’ or bio-elements: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Vata = Air + Space
Qualities: light, dry, cool, rough.
Signs: In our skin, Vata shows itself as dryness, dehydration, roughness, flakiness, pronounced wrinkles and fine lines, sagging skin.
Skincare: anti-aging products target Vata dosha through ingredients with
opposite qualities:
nourishing, warming, firming.
Pitta = Fire + Water
Qualities: hot, sharp, light, liquid.
Signs: In our skin, Pitta shows itself as redness, inflammation like acne, and reactive skin.
Skincare: usually acne relief skincare targets Pitta dosha (inflammation) through opposite ingredients that have
cooling and soothing qualities.
Kapha = Earth + Water
Qualities: heavy, slow, smooth, soft, unctuous.
Signs: In our skin, Kapha shows itself as (excess) oil, soft, juicy skin, large open pores and congestion like blackheads.
Skincare: Oil control products target Kapha dosha through ingredients that are light and
dry in nature.
Kind of makes sense, doesn’t it?
When one or more of these doshas are imbalanced, their qualities are more pronounced.
And the beauty of the Science of Ayurveda is that it knows how to balance all 3 doshas parallelly.
Mind you: this is not something that was discovered overnight in a lab. The earliest mentions of Ayurveda were recorded about 5000 years ago, so you can imagine the amount of trial-and-error formulations went through before they were finalized to be passed on through generations.
By carefully selecting ingredients that target specific doshas and using them in a
perfected proportion, Ayurveda has created formulations for face, body and hair that nurture and
balance every dosha - without aggravating another.
Whenever skincare products target a specific skin problem, they’re often quite harsh and are
hyper fixated on fixing that one problem,
without taking into account the rest of the skin’s microbiome.
These are often products that contain ingredients like retinol. They may show immediate effects, but aren’t
beneficial for your skin in the long run.
Since Ayurveda is over 5000 years old, the ingredients that were available weren’t created in labs, but
found in nature.
No pesticides either – so
only organic, non-GMO, wildcrafted ingredients sourced from one of the biggest thriving ecosystems on earth: India, the homeland of Ayurveda.
With thousands of herbs tried-and-tested over thousands of years,
Ayurveda knows exactly which herbs are beneficial for your skin in the long run.
Yes, there is, in fact, a way to activate the
maximum bioavailability of each ingredient in a formulation. Ayurveda discovered this interesting procedure thousands of years ago and prescribes it in the ancient Ayurvedic texts.
Without having to use chemical reactions in a lab, like most synthetic creams do.
Natural skincare products are usually made by just blending the ingredients together.
But science and chemistry teach us that simply blending ingredients doesn’t mean that they’ll actually be effective.
Such synthetic or simply 'natural' skincare products cannot match the potency of traditionally prepared Ayurvedic oils, which ensure maximum bioavailability of each ingredient.
Ancient Ayurvedic texts reveal the meticulous process of cooking – yes, cooking – authentic Ayurvedic oils to bring out each herb's maximum efficacy:
Herbs like manjistha, turmeric, saffron, lotus etc are sustainably wildcrafted from their natural habitat, where they have the richest soil for optimal nutrition. Herbs should be certified pesticide-free and quality checked for heavy metals etc.
Herbs are washed and dried multiple times, then pounded into a powder.
Depending on the properties of the herbs, they're either made into:
- a 'Kalka' which is a thick paste with the powdered herbs
- or a 'Kashaya' which is a liquid concoction with the pounded herbs.
A base oil (eg. sesame) is heated and boiled at supervised & safe temperatures. High precision is required to ensure the oil does not burn. The Kalka and Kashaya (paste and liquid concoction) is stirred into the boiling oil, and kept at a very specific temperature that's constantly monitored. The oils is then allowed to cool naturally, and strained with a cloth.
The Ayurvedic texts prescribe exactly how long and at which temperature each formulation should be made.
Only highly skilled artisans with the right equipment can bring such an oil to successful completion.
An authentic, effective Ayurvedic formulation will implement Ayurvedic principles such as “like increases like” as an ingredient-selection criterion. (Remember the doshas and their imbalances we talked about earlier?)
This entire process makes these oils super potent and powerful. Ordinary creams and serums are no match for such a potent, traditional ancient formulation.
4. You Haven't Been Using Polyherbal Formulations with Targeted Ingredients
While natural skincare or even oils (almond, castor, argan etc) alone are a great start, a better way to get even more targeted benefits for your skin and to get it back to a healthy looking glow is by cooking it with herbs and spices.
Some of the best Ayurvedic ingredients specifically for dull, uneven, aging skin are:
Saffron
Also known as 'red gold' (because it's more expensive in weight than actual gold!), saffron has been used for centuries to enhance the complexion and improve skin tone. Saffron is awarded a position of
regal dignity in Ayurveda for its immaculate and not-commonly-known properties such as:
'Bioavailability Enhancer': Saffron is known as a ‘yogavahi’ herb in Ayurveda as it acts as a catalyst for other herbs it is taken with. This means that
it enhances the effectiveness of other herbs in polyherbal formulations without changing the constitution of the formulation.
Balances all 3 doshas: Saffron is one of the few herbs in Ayurveda that’s capable of balancing all three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) with equal efficiency. It helps in maintaining a balance within the bodily functions and also harmony with respect to mind, soul and social well-being.
'Rejuvenator': As a
rasayana, Saffron possesses the unique quality to invigorate the body and mind with strength and energy that is necessary to enhance ojas and tejas (the life essence) in every human being.
For this reason, Saffron is also one of the foremost herbs used in many rejuvenation therapies in Ayurveda, both externally for abhyanga (massage) and internally in herbal Ayurvedic drinks.
Saffron is also a
mineral-rich spice with a long line-up of essential nutrients like
copper, potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, selenium, zinc and magnesium.
The dried stigmas of the plant are rich in flavonoids, vitamins and carotenoids. All of these properties make it an excellent ingredient for skincare to impart a healthy glow, even-tone the look of uneven skin, enhance complexion, brighten, and illuminate skin!
Manjistha
Also known as Indian Madder,
purifying Manjistha is a celebrated rejuvenative and complexion enhancer.
It helps in balancing the skin's temper-tantrums and
uneven skin tone.
It is added to Ayurvedic oils to make the complexion even and tone down the appearance of uneven
spots (age spots, sun spots, blemishes) to give a relatively more
even-looking complexion.
If your skin reminds you of angry, teenage days, Manjistha is like a soothing breeze of maturity and patience which boosts rather than smothers youthful exuberance!
Turmeric
Turmeric is an
all-rounder player in the Ayurvedic skincare game. It specializes in
toning, brightening and cleansing the skin to help it achieve an illuminating glow. From being the
expert detoxifier to honing the
healthy glow and flow of your skin, it can do it all.
Studies have shown that a natural compound in Turmeric, known as 'curcumin' naturally
enhances complexion while also
clarifying the look of the skin, and imparts a radiant glow.
It
firms up the appearance of the skin, keeps aging skin
youthful-looking, and lends a
natural, raw glow.
What's even more stunning about this beautiful yellow spice is that along with keeping the skin youthful-looking, it also
balances the skin’s texture and oiliness to avoid the look of acne, breakouts, and blemishes.
Wild Himalayan Cherry
This tree's bark contains ursolic acid, which has some powerful, targeted benefits – interestingly, most specifically on photoaged skin. This natural acid is bio-active compound the skincare world has only recently discovered, yet is still completely underused!
In a recent study to assess the effectiveness of twice a day usage of a moisturizer containing Ursolic Acid, clinical evaluations after 8 weeks showed a statistically significant improvement in all grading parameters: the appearance of
fine lines and wrinkles,
clarity and brightness of the skin,
visual roughness,
tactile roughness, the look of redness, the appearance of
pigmentation, and overall appearance.(1)
Another in vitro study reported that Ursolic Acid was MORE effective than retinoic acid!(2)
A study demonstrated Ursolic Acid, when added to skin’s lipid barrier, promoted the
skin’s moisture-retaining properties as well as its firmness(3). It has also been found to discourage protein breakdown,(4) which helps skin maintain its taut appearance, reducing the appearance of
large pores.
More modern researches and clinical studies continue to reveal even more benefits of Ursolic acid - but Ayurveda already discovered its powers thousands of years ago through herbs like Wild Himalayan Cherry.
5. You haven't been using an Ancient, Proven, Time-Tested Formulation
Would you even
want to go back to using synthetic or just 'natural' skincare after knowing they're not bringing out the ingredients' full potential, meaning you're spending your hard-earned dollars on products that aren't even effective?
And aren't made to keep the entire skin's microbiome healthy and balanced? We don't even know the long-term effects of such products on our skin!
Ask yourself, is it really worth it?
What if we tell you that there is a long-term safe 100% natural, chemical-free Ayurvedic face oil, that can balance all your skin woes and will make you forget about those ordinary creams and serums?
