HOW TO USE AYURVEDIC FACE OILS
"Do I apply the face oil and leave out my moisturizer, or should I apply the oil, then the moisturizer or the other way round?"
If these were the thoughts that have run wild in your head after you decided to get one of iYURA’s amber bottles, then read along.
We collated some of the most commonly asked questions about our oils and our Ayurvedic experts have answered the most popular why’s, how’s and when’s of using Ayurvedic oils for your face, hair and body.
Ayurvedic face oils are one of the most versatile skincare products as they can be used in a multitude of ways for various benefits. Besides, oil is to your skin as rain is to parched earth, and it not only physically “feeds” your skin but taking that much needed ‘me time’ to massage it onto your skin equally nourishes your soul too!
BUT – you might be wondering how you should be using this oil...
To use an Ayurvedic face oil properly, follow these steps:
1
Cleanse your face and neck
Use a natural face wash (like Ajara's Coconut Rose Softening Wash) to cleanse your face from dust, dirt, or accumulated sebum. Gently pat dry, and follow with a toner, if you use one. If you're doing a full 5-step routine, start with cleansing your face, then use a scrub, then use your mask. Follow with a toner, and move on to the next step.
2
Take a small amount of oil to massage gently
-
Authentic Ayurvedic face oils don’t contain any water in the end product, compared to lotions, creams or moisturizers where you might see “Water” as the first ingredient on the list. Because of this, Ayurvedic oils do not dilute the efficiency of their ingredients, so a little goes a long way.
-
The instructions on your bottle will tell you how much you need, but it’s usually between 3-6 drops, depending on how dry your skin is, the climate you live in, and whether you’re doing just your face or also your neck and décolletage.
-
Take these drops in your palm, gently rub your hands together, and continue to the next step.
3
Gently massage into your skin
-
Use the palms of your hands to spread the oil across your face, neck, and décolletage.
-
Gently massage it into your skin. Don’t simply dab it on but take the time to massage your skin so that the oil gets absorbed deep into the layers of your skin.
-
The added benefit of doing this daily is that massaging the skin improves blood circulation and gives you that healthy, plump look and rosy glow!
4
Done!
You won’t need an added moisturizer after this, but make sure you apply SPF before stepping outside. If you’re applying the oil at night, you can simply go to bed and repeat the same process in the morning!
Pro tip: Ayurveda recommends massaging your face with a special technique, focusing on Marma points or Ayurvedic energy points.

No, your oil acts as a moisturizer and doesn’t need to be washed off. By the time you finish your massage, your face and neck should feel sufficiently moisturized but not overly greasy or left with residue.
If you’ve ended up using too much oil and have a thick layer on your face, simply dab it off with a dry tissue or cloth.
Still prefer to wash it off? Leave it applied for at least 20 minutes so that your oil can act as a moisturizing mask, before washing it off.
-
Depending on their ingredient combinations, face oils can be used both in the morning and evening, meaning you'll have round-the-clock care. While day-time face oils (like Kesaradi Oil) give you optimal and lasting moisturization along with skin that appears glowy, night-time face oils (like Manjish Glow Elixir) help to fight away tiredness and fatigue by clarifying your look for a rejuvenated appearance, thus refreshing and nourishing it while you sleep.

CORRECT SKINCARE ORDER
Cleanser
Scrub
Mask
Toner
Serum
Oil
Cream (Optional)
SPF
A face oil acts as a moisturizer, so you would use it to replace creams, as the last step of your skincare routine. The most common skincare steps are:
-
Face wash
-
Face scrub
-
Face mask
-
Face toner
-
Face serum
-
Face oil
-
Face cream, if still desired after using a face oil. Many of our customers don't feel the need to use a cream after their oil.
-
Remember to apply SPF before stepping outside.
Whether you do this full routine every day or only have a 2-step routine, oils are the last step before SPF, and after the face wash.

Typically, face oils prove to be intensely hydrating and moisturizing by themselves. Most of our customers don’t feel the need to use a cream after applying their oil.
However, if your skin is extremely dry and you live in a dry climate, you might feel the need for added hydration. In this case, make sure to use a 100% natural cream or concentrate that doesn’t negate all the Ayurvedic goodness you’ve just applied through your oil. An excellent choice is Ajara’s Turmeric Tangerine Youth Concentrate. It is formulated specifically for dry, mature, aging skin types.

Face oils are incredibly versatile and adaptable in different ways for different purposes. Apart from your normal, usual massage, you can even use them in different, interesting ways:
1. Mix with moisturizers
One of the best ways to use oils differently is to combine them with moisturizers for extra moisture and to lock in hydration. Together, their light-heavy textures complement each other and you can ensure that your skin gets the best of best, especially if it dries too quickly or too much when you just use a serum or moisturizer. This also suits aging and mature skin types which tend to need more than usual hydration. Your best bet is to use a potent, deeply moisturizing face oil like iYURA Yauvari Amplified Youth Spring which is designed to impart a more youthful and livelier look to mature skin that appears ‘saggy’ or ‘crepey’.
2. Combine with serums
Serum is a concentrate of active and powerful ingredients which targets specific skin concerns, and deeply hydrates. On the other hand, face oils are moisturizing in nature.
As serums are for hydration and oils for moisturization, a combination of these two would be immensely helpful for aging skin that’s prone to dryness and dehydration or Vata-aggravated skin types. If your skin needs extra support with these two qualities, apply a serum first to hydrate your skin followed by an oil to lock in that hydration. Together, serums and oil provide an all-round effective layer for lasting softness and velvety smooth skin.
Using a serum and face oil is never an either/or situation and most times, by adding a few drops of face oil, you can ensure that your skin is also enriched with all the natural and herbal essence needed to enliven your look such as with iYURA Prinourish Skin Enriching Superfood Serum. This face oil has a charming serum-like quality naturally and can give your skin an extra boost and support to revive under-nutritioned skin that looks dry and goes hand-in-hand with your other usual serums.

The directions on your bottle will give you an idea of the amount of oil you should use, but it’s generally between 3 and 6 drops. It might be more if you have dry skin, live in a dry climate, or are applying to not just your face but also your neck and décolletage. Remember that less is more! If you’re using a Kansa Wand for face massage, you will use more oil to ensure smooth gliding of the wand. More on Kansa massage later!

Once in the morning after cleansing your face, and once at night, before going to bed.

Yes! iYURA oils do not protect the skin from UV rays. Always apply an SPF before stepping out.

Thousands of our customers have adopted the “no-makeup look” after using iYURA oils - simply because they give your skin a stunning, healthy-looking glow and naturally uber-nourished, dewy sheen, so much so that you might want to ditch coverage makeup altogether – and now only use, for example, mascara, eye shadow or lipstick.
However, if you still like to use coverage makeup like liquid or powder foundation, blush, highlighters and bronzers, you can definitely use those alongside iYURA face oils.
1. Use as a primer
To create a naturally flawless base before you apply makeup, iYURA’s Prinourish Skin-Enriching Superfood can be used as an incredibly instrumental all-natural makeup primer. Prinourish is colorless and light, and allows foundation (powder or liquid) to blend beautifully on the skin.
2. Mix with your primer
The purpose of primers is to increase coverage and lengthen the amount of time your makeup stays on, but they can dry the skin out. By adding a few drops of face oil to your primer, you can finally stop feeling like your skin is stretched out by the primer! Along with keeping your face moisturized, face oils smooth over the look of blemishes, wrinkles and lines and also add a touch of sparkle and glow that will seamlessly blend with your look no matter which style you decide on for the day. Again, iYURA’s Prinourish Skin-Enriching Superfood Serum is a wonderful choice.
3. Mix with foundation
Mixing face oil with your foundation is another interesting way to use your face oil. Add 2-3 drops of Prinourish to liquid foundation and mix it well before applying. It will help blend and smoothen your foundation!
4. Use as lip primer
Since iYURA oils are 100% natural, there’s no harm in applying them on the lips. In fact, they make for a wonderful lip primer to keep the lips moisturized and plump under your lipstick! Apply a thin layer on the lips and allow a few minutes for the oil to get absorbed (it’s important to give the oil enough time to absorb). Apply your lipstick, and done!
5. Use as makeup remover
Did we mention that face oils are incredibly versatile? We really meant it too! You can not only use a face oil before and with your makeup products, but also to cleanse and wipe it all away too! Soak your makeup removing wipes or your washcloth with a few drops of your face oil and follow a gentle dab and wipe motion to remove your makeup, dead skin cells, dirt and any other leftover residue. While most of iYURA’s polyherbal formulations contain herbs and therefore microparticles of the herbs, we don’t recommend using those to remove eye-makeup.

Ayurvedic oils are polyherbal formulations that are created to specifically bring out the essence of each herb in exact quantities. You can mix and blend different Ayurvedic oils together, but keep in mind that you'll be applying less of each oil in application, so the efficacy of each oil will get reduced. Having said that, there's no harm in mixing Ayurvedic oils together. In fact, here are a few possibilities where you might want to mix your Ayurvedic oils:
If you want to amplify the effects of your Ayurvedic oil:
You can add just 1 drop of iYURA's Turmerisa Double-Turmeric Facial Essence, the Ayurvedic Activator Oil! Though Turmerisa may be used as a regular Ayurvedic face oil throughout the day, its true nature is observed through its ability to amplify the impact of other iYURA oils. Just 1 drop can boost the power of your skincare ritual and help the already potent ingredients involved in the skin-beautifying process to nurture the skin even deeper.

Kansa Wand is an extremely soothing and relaxing massage tool that truly gives you a spa-like experience, even from the comfort of your own home. This all-natural, non-electronic (no batteries, no wires) massage wand will give you a smooth and tightened look while it helps reduce the appearance of any puffiness and even improve blood circulation for a livelier feel. What’s interesting about this massage wand is that you can choose to massage your whole face or just parts of it, wherever you think a massage is needed. To properly use the Kansa Wand for a delightful face massage, follow these steps:
-
Make sure that you use enough oil (about 2 pumps) to let the wand slide and glide smoothly over your skin.
-
Rub it on your hands and gently press it onto your face to transfer the oil.
-
Next, start massaging from the center of your forehead using a slow circular motion for at least 30 seconds-1 minute. You can also do this while lying down so that your shoulder and back muscles are automatically relaxed.
-
Now, gently move back and forth across the forehead in a horizontal direction using the wand.
-
Use a small circular motion in clockwise direction at the temples and then towards the nose completing a circle around each eye in both directions so you can feel your cheek bones and brow bone.
-
Then, slowly move down to make a similar circle but around your cheeks, from where the nose joins the face to the highest point of your cheekbones near your ears.
-
Circle right in the middle of the upper lip and then move up and out of the face gently.
-
Gently use this movement to move to the jaws tracing your jawbone in a similar style.
You can easily and quickly massage your face using these Kansa Massage Wands for a calm, refreshing and spa-like experience, in the comfort of your homes, as part of a daily routine or even within a longer massage session.
