Well famous as Red Gold’ or ‘Autumn Gold’, Saffron is the world’s most expensive spice ever! The title of ‘Red Gold’ seems self-explanatory. The red colored stamen of the purple Crocus sativus flower, saffron sells for almost the same price as gold!An important Ayurvedic herb, saffron is so precious that, in some cultures, just plain, pure dried saffron is given as a very expensive, respectable gift!
What makes it so expensive is the fact that in one flower, there are only 3 stamens and it takes a harvest of 50,000–75,000 flowers to glean 16 oz (450 g) of dry saffron!
But why bother to extract it anyway?
