4 BIGGEST FOOD MYTHS BUSTED!

Do you like to top off your meals with a bowl of fruit?
Or power through a rough evening with nothing but a few grapes? Because you believe fruits are great as snacks and desserts?

Yes?

Well, congratulations, you have fallen for a
classic nutritional trap
!

Fruits are undoubtedly healthy and should be an indispensable part of your diet. But there IS an ideal time to consume them, which, according to Ayurveda, is in the morning! (except for citrus fruits, which can be eaten during the day). That is because morning time is kapha time, when your digestive fire or Agni is low. And so, something easy to digest (like fruits) is ideal. Eating fruits with meals, or between meals (when you’re not done digesting a previous meal) could lead them to ferment in your gut and lead to the production of toxins in the body!

Guess fruits are not the ideal choice for dessert then!

Crazy how the truth goes against the modern wisdom, isn’t it?

‘A myth is cultivated because it is monetizable and profitable.’

The perennial food economy would have us believe any nutritional myths, just so that their
industries keep making profits. But that is changing!

More and more people are waking up to the harmful effects of fast food and quick fixes.
Digging deeper is the first step to genuinely understand what we consume,
to stay away from unhealthy food and to provide better
nourishment to our bodies.

Ayurveda is a fantastic avenue to start this quest, and we’re beginning by debunking some food myths that are widely thought to be true.

Scroll on to find more modern food myths debunked by Ayurveda.
Some of them might surprise you!

Gluten free foods are healthy alternatives to foods containing gluten.
Are they really?

Most foods labelled as ‘Gluten-free’ aren’t really gluten free, they’re only marketed as gluten free. They might still have traces of ‘hidden gluten’ which are cleverly concealed in the fine print and can potentially be very harmful for people who must not consume gluten!

Not to mention that gluten is also a component of several seemingly-harmless staples – condiments, seasonings, processed cheese, snacks, candies and many more! So avoiding gluten isn’t as easy as picking the food labelled ‘gluten-free’, because it isn’t truly gluten free!

Margarine is better than butter.
Quick question – what would you rather trust between natural and chemical?

Unlike Butter, Margarine is made from vegetable oils and contains a large amount of trans fats and tons of artificial ingredients. Butter, on the other hand, is derived from saturated milk and is packed with useful fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which decrease LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL (good cholesterol).

Besides, the insane amount of processing that goes into making margarine means that any advantageous fats contained in it have already been deconstructed and reconstructed (for worse). Sticking to butter is way better than having margarine!

Fat free food is healthy.

To put it in perspective, fat free food is as healthy as a can of soft drink is.

(Hint - it’s not healthy!)

This is perhaps the biggest myth of today’s times!

Modern Science now shows evidence that weaning fat off food can actually increase the risk of contracting serious cardiovascular illnesses, cancer, and diabetes.

That is because fat is a rich source of nutrition and energy and preserves the immunity and liquid reserves inside your body. It restores, nourishes, and sustains the body, hence enhancing vitality and energy. No wonder that a low-fat diet can lead to health problems!

A word of caution – when we talk about fats we’re talking about the good fats, such as the ones found in dairy, olive oil, butter, ghee, or any kind of rendered fat. Beware of trans fats - they’re the ones found in deep-fried food and junk food and are very harmful for health!

Turns out, our ancestors were right about a lot of things! They consumed so much fat and protein, yet led relatively healthy, disease-free lives. Do you know why?

Because, before the onslaught of fad diets, food industries and modern, ‘fast’ ways of eating, we relied on an intuitive understanding of food, a vision that didn’t depend on the onset of disease or symptoms to know which food is harmful.

The good news is, we haven’t lost the ability to do so; it is just buried very, very deep. And an even better news is that you can find it again, with the wisdom of the ancients!
