It’s not just the glaciers in the Himalayas and the global ocean levels, Climate Change happens inside our bodies too, every day, all the time!
Poor lifestyles and external stresses throw off the delicate balance of elements in our physiology, causing us to get too spacey, or fiery or boggy. You may call these imbalances the results of pathogenesis or oxidative stress but Ayurveda explains it in a far more real way, which we can all relate to…
But first, the great news –
Unlike climate change at the macro level, our internal climate can be reclaimed and restored. In fact, taking back this unique inner climate is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do for yourself and your family. Hyperbole? Not really. This is what Ayurveda tells us…
Each prakruti is completely unique, with certain elements predominating.
(This is the reason, by the way, that your talkative best friend is so “spaced-out” - but more on that later!)
Because making the right choices for your family and for you is VERY confusing. After all, you are surrounded by so much generalized information and scientific findings that seem to change every day!
You know what we mean - you’re drowning in questions about which food and diet trend are just fads. Questions like: “How do I know which form of exercise works best for me right now? Which foods may actually be aggravating my child’s attention deficit issues? Why is my reproductive health not improving despite weight loss? Is a gluten free diet the right choice for my individual body? And why does following the maximum of “eight hours of sleep a day” actually leave me feeling even more lethargic instead of refreshed?”
Phew! That’s a lot of questions – but finding their answers becomes simpler when you know - really know - your PRAKRUTI or unique nature, doesn’t it?
Think about it: Say, blueberries are a great source of antioxidants and all your friends are swearing by them. But you stay away, because you know the fruit acids from the blueberries are a “trigger” for your naturally dominant Pitta or fiery element, which anyway tends to overflow, leading to heartburn. You wisely prefer to get your antioxidants from milder, sweeter fruits, such as avocados and coconuts…
Let’s keep it real. Most of us are not!
That is why understanding the balance of elements in you is so important!
AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE OTHER, MORE EXCITING PART: YOUR OPTIMAL STATE IS AN IDYLL BUT IT IS ALSO A VERY, VERY ACHIEVABLE IDYLL.
Ayurveda tells us the elements in us WANT to get back into their native nature. If we’re born Vata dominant, for instance, with the spacey, airy elements dominating our prakruti, you can be sure no matter how many fiery or boggy symptoms you display, your body wants to go into Vata mode. All it needs to get there is for the distorting pressures to be released, much like a child’s released slinky finds its shape back! .
Before you start making changes, think about THIS:
You probably know you are not in a state of perfect balance or your native climate right now…
But do you know you haven’t been in a long, long while too?
Years of imbalances and external stresses means we have been in a state of vikruti – or altered doshas – for quite some time. Even when we try to recall our “ORIGINAL” nature, we might be referring to an imbalance of five years ago!!!
SO HOW DO YOU GET TO YOUR PRAKRUTI – YOUR HIDDEN, TANTALIZING, INNATE OPTIMAL NATURE?
How do you heal your current symptoms and peel back the layers of imbalances to zoom into your native climate, from the inside-out?
And how do you make sense of all this intelligence in a meaningful way that impacts your life and those of your family?
Want to know more about Marisa?
Marisa received her certification from the American Institute of Vedic Studies and completed her postgraduate study in Ayurveda with Dr. Geetha S.R. of the Sree Sankara Ayurveda Hospital in Kerala, India.
She is a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association and has a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from California State University, Fullerton, California. Marisa teaches a variety of Ayurveda and Yoga programs worldwide and is a life-long student of Ayurveda, Yoga and Vedanta.
“In my two decades of healing with Ayurveda, the BIGGEST LESSON I have learnt is that no two individuals are alike. Ayurveda teaches that at the time of conception, there is a unique ratio of Vata, Pitta and Kapha that is determined and that makes us our own unique selves. Your prakruti never changes, and is your state of optimal health, the sum of all your tendencies. Our constitution (prakruti) is often defined in terms of the percentages of each dosha. For example, someone might be 50% Vata, 30% Pitta and 20% Kapha. Knowing this allows you to make informed lifestyle choices in order to maintain optimal health and balance according to your constitution.”
Marisa’s course will show you how to learn your prakruti and to use this intelligence in small, practical ways that will improve your quality of life on the ground. How to identify what herbs are best for you, what foods are best for you, what time is best for you to go to bed, what time is best to arise each morning. What form of exercise is best, what sights, sounds, tastes, touch and smell! No fancy promises or hyperbole here, just real tips that work. One of the greatest joys of learning with Marisa is her ability to keep it real. Like she says:
“My course won’t bring you to “perfect” health because, well, perfection is a cookie cutter concept. And Ayurveda isn’t interested in cookie cutter concepts. What my course will do, though, is help you work towards your optimal health. If you have only 4 fingers on your right hand, Ayurveda does not claim to be able to grow a fifth finger. What it does do, though, is help your four-fingered hand work as deftly and strongly as it can.”
1. About the Five Great Elements that constitute us – the pancha mahabhutas – Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth
2. The ten pairs of opposing qualities contained in these elements: hot/cold, moist/dry, hard/soft and so on. How all these qualities can be used to define every natural material – a cloud, a plant, an elephant and you!
3. And how the elements and qualities come together in the form of the three doshas in your body
4. What are doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha - or the energetic forces that govern our prakruti .
5. How can you tell which doshic combination predominates in YOU? You can have two doshas predominating and in some people all three doshas are present in a ratio of roughly 33% each. That’s another level of customization, isn’t it? To really ‘get’ your own customized physiology…
6. The course gives you a fun and extremely detailed diagnostic chart for each dosha – consider factors you normally wouldn’t: like the shape of your hands, your sleep hygiene, your moods and many more – to get the complete picture of the doshas that govern you. Consider things like
Remember we spoke of your friend who appears distracted and “spacey”? She may well have a Vata or air-ether imbalance – and that’s how our language is reflected in Ayurvedic concepts. Ether is literally space! By the way, being spacey is not a bad thing. A surprising number of creative people are Vata dominant, because their innate ‘spaciness’ gives room for thoughts and ideas to flow through them.
7. That was about the doshas in your original prakruti. But what about now? Are your dominant doshas out of balance right now? Is your lifestyle causing an excess of Vata, Pitta or Kapha? The course will show you how to assess your current state of doshas and determine your current physiology or vikruti.
8. Identify which dosha is dominating in your current symptoms – ask questions like: “Am I depressed? Is my skin too dry? Do I have a condition like a thyroid imbalance?”
9. Explore a very surprising fact – not just YOU, but your symptoms too have a doshic predisposition! For example, a boggy symptom like lethargy is Kapha – the ‘heavy’ dosha – a mixture of earth and water. It is entirely possible for a Pitta or fiery person to show a Kapha symptom in the NOW!
10. Most importantly, once you have determined your current physiology or vikruti, the course shows you how to heal, applying the LAWS OF NATURE
11. It will tell you The THREE ALL-IMPORTANT THINGS that must be known to heal, the CONDITIONS TO HEAL
12. Show you how to apply the healing modalities of Ayurveda:
13. It will tell you where disease really begins…
And this is a really central concept in Ayurvedic healing. No matter where it manifests, most disease begins in our mind at the subtle level and our digestive tract at the physical level. Whatever your current vikruti – it could be a skin rash, a hormonal imbalance or excessive weight gain - you need to balance it in your mind and your gut! AYURVEDA & YOU tells you detailed guidelines to balance these systems as per your current vikruti, and not just the systems where the disease is manifesting.
14. It unearths for you the CAUSES OF DISEASE
15. And how to remove these and heal yourself through
16. Tips and tricks to balance your particular doshas
- How to keep Vata in balance through practices like drinking warm fluids often and similarly for Pitta and Kapha…
- …through choosing the right pacifying herbs, such as cooling cilantro for Pitta. These are small lifestyle changes but they really go a long way in giving your body what it wants and keeping it happy and balanced!
17. You will learn the “triggers” that draw your doshas out of balance –and keep away from the must-avoid behaviors that can imbalance your dominant doshas.

And here’s the most fun part: the course also tells you unexpected, exciting nuggets like why using a loofah on your skin may actually help with your frequent wet coughs…
“Something important to understand is that even one small change can have huge, positive ripple effects in your life. And changes that you make on a physical level not only help with bringing balance to your physical body, but to your mind as well, and vice versa.”
Frequent wet coughs are a sign of Kapha imbalance… or the heavy, earthy, elements weighing you down. Scrubbing your skin with a loofah is one of the practices that ups circulation and gets “things moving” and that includes the mucous out of your sinus cavities! See how Ayurveda reveals for you these exciting, hidden connections and shows you how knowing your vikruti and prakruti can create a ripple effect of good health in your life….?
“If we lived in a perfect world of balance and harmony, a world in which we ate all the right foods, got plenty of sleep each night, exercised regularly, didn’t drink or smoke, avoided stress, etc., there would be no open door or window for ill health. Hmm…I wonder how many of you live such an idyllic life…”
Most of us, let’s face it, live lives filled with unbalancing influences. We often eat improperly. We don’t get sufficient sleep. We are overworked. We smoke, drink alcohol and stay up until late at night. Ayurveda judges none of this: selfish action and the pursuit of pleasure is a natural part of human existence and nothing to be ashamed of. What Ayurveda does say, though, is that these behaviors create imbalances within the body and mind. It is the imbalance that must be treated.
And guess what - modern living is especially adept at piling on the imbalances, which is why this course is the need of the hour. More than any other time in history, our lifestyles are making our bodies deviate from their prakruti really fast and really early on – sometimes in childhood itself! And do you know why?
What has happened to the lotion you applied on your skin? The funny clip you just watched on You Tube?
They have entered your system and your system is processing them.
And ask yourself: “have our systems ever had as many sensory inputs to digest?”
As many complicated foods,
Images, Words, Sounds, Chemicals?
All these influences are adding layers of vikruti to our innate optimal nature like never before. So having the right tools to correct our imbalances and get to our best self is all the more important today!
Marisa says Ayurvedic healing must keep in mind your current symptoms, original climate or prakruti and the nature of the medicine, that’s how finely calibrated it is. And if you don’t, well…
“Let me share with you something that happened in my life in regards to this concept and has served to provide quite a learning experience!
Several years ago, when I first was studying Ayurveda at the California College of Ayurveda, my father-in-law approached me on a busy Christmas Day with a health problem. Specifically, he was experiencing heart burn and wanted to know if I had any suggestions. Now, I had only been studying Ayurveda for a few weeks, and at the California College of Ayurveda we strongly emphasize that students are not to begin practicing on other people until they enter internship. And it is because of this very situation that I’m about to describe that this rule is so important!
Well, in my eagerness to help my father-in-law, I decided to bend the rules and give him some advice. In my mind, I thought “well, how could it hurt? This is harmless enough”. And I was so eager to go into practice! So, I said “sure, I can help you”. I decided that a tea would be a good choice for helping him and I settled on some ginger tea for him. I had heard that ginger is great for digestion.
And my father-in-law was having digestive issues – so voila! I was confident I was making a good choice.
I proceeded to brew my father-in-law a nice cup of ginger tea which was made with dried ginger… And after that I got busy with the festivities and lost sight of him.
A couple of weeks later, I saw my father-in-law again and asked him about his digestive issue and if the tea that I gave on Christmas had helped. He sheepishly chuckled, smiled, and said “well… something I need to tell you. After I drank the tea that you gave me, my heartburn got so bad I had to go lie down and I wasn’t even able to eat the Christmas dinner”.
Oh my goodness! What had I done? I couldn’t imagine. I felt terrible about this! He had a digestive problem, I gave him digestive tea, what could possibly have gone wrong? As my studies continued and I began to understand the concepts of Ayurveda better, I realized my mistake. My father-in-law was having an overheated digestive issue. That’s what heartburn is; it’s a case of too much heat in the digestive tract. What he needed was a cooling digestive herb. I didn’t properly understand this concept at the time, and I gave him a tea containing dried ginger, which is actually quite hot. It’s like I poured gasoline on a fire!”
Since Ayurveda provides such an amazing framework for understanding the Three Things That Must Be Known (the nature of the person, the nature of the imbalance, and the nature of the remedy), by understanding Ayurveda you are extraordinarily empowered to make healthy choices. No longer are boxes of “digestive” tea all the same. They each have unique properties, and each are best suited for conditions according to which dosha needs to be subdued.
And you can really use this e-course
to apply this perspective to every area of life and unlock your optimal self. Remember, the idyll is achievable because it’s not perfection we are chasing, but finding our own unique selves… the climate we best thrive in, like oranges in California and olives in Greece…
