    Ulcerative colitis is a disease that leads to the inflammation in the lower intestine. Sadly, this results in pain and blood during the passage of stool. It can affect a person of any age or gender.

    The symptoms of this disease include:

    • Fatigue
    • Dysentery
    • Diarrhoea
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Bloating in the stomach
    • Pain in the lower abdomen
    • Fever

    Inflammation of the colon is the first step of this disease. This can be due to bacterial/virus infections, inflammatory bowel disease and lack of blood supply in the colon. In the onset of ulcerative colitis many sores or ulcers appear on the lining of the colon.

    10 Effective Herbal Remedies for Ulcerative Colitis

    1. Kutej (Holarrhena Antidysenterica)

    The herb kutej is very useful in the problem of ulcerative colitis. It helps in proper bowel movement and prevents the condition of diarrhoea and dysentery.

    2. Bael (Aegle marmelos)

    Bael contains the nutritional fiber named pectin and helps in providing relief from inflammation, pain and other digestive disorders. It is helpful against:

    • Inflammatory bowel disease
    • Diarrhea
    • Dysentery
    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Other digestive infections

    Bael possesses the property of anti-inflammation to reduce inflammation in the colon region. It is antimicrobial and helps in fighting against microbial infections.

    3. Anar (Punica granatum)

    Anar is known for its many medicinal properties, as it helps in maintaining the balance in Vata, Kapha and Pitta. It is also helpful in reducing fever, excessive thirst and burning sensations that manifest from ulcerative colitis. Anar helps in cleansing and clarifying the whole digestive system.

    In addition, anar is good source of Vitamin B5, Vitamin C, Potassium and Polyphenols. It possess the property of aphrodisiac and is helpful to increase the sperm count.

    4. Arjun

    Arjuna bark is used to control:

    • High blood pressure
    • Cholesterol
    • Heart problems
    • Triglyceride counts in the body

    It contains antioxidants that are helpful in detoxification and maintain the metabolic functions. It is rich in ions like zinc, calcium, copper and magnesium. It is known for its anti-diarrheal, anti-dysentery and anti-inflammatory properties, which are very useful in the healing of ulcerative colitis.

    5. Sauf (Foeniculum vulgare)

    Sauf is helpful in ulcerative colitis as it is cooling, which relieves the burning sensations in the colon area. Sauf helps in proper digestion, cleaning the digestive tract and acidity problem. It can be taken directly by chewing or making extract of it by boiling few seeds in water by adding coriander into it.

    6. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)

    There are many medicinal properties of Guduchi that make it a very important herb. It is useful in boosting the immune system, is anti-diabetic, controls high cholesterol, relieves allergic rhinitis and fights against stomach problems.

    Guduchi is helpful in gout, lymphoma, cancers, fever, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis and peptic ulcers. The juice of Guduchi mixed with cumin seeds can be one of the best remedies to reduce the burning sensation of ulcerative colitis.

    7. Chamomile Tea

    Daily use of chamomile tea can be beneficial in the condition of ulcerative colitis. Chamomile is very popular because of its cooling effect, which provides relief of the burning sensation of this disease. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory property, which reduces the inflammation of colon area and reduces ulcerative colitis symptoms.

    Boil 2-3 grams of fresh leaves of chamomile herb in one cup of water, and consume it after steeping for 10 min. This can be used three times a day for best results.

    8. Fenugreek (Trigonella Foenum graecum L.)

    The other name of fenugreek is methi.  It is very useful in the condition of ulcerative colitis. It forms a protective layer along the digestive tract and helps in smooth bowel movement. Fenugreek also possess anti-inflammatory, anti-bloating and antioxidant properties. Methi contains iron, calcium, protein and vitamins A and C. Use fenugreek seeds by soaking in water overnight or steeping in water for 10 min.

    9. Rose (Rosa centifolia)

    The cooling nature of rose petals is very useful in relieving the burning pain of ulcerative colitis. Rose can be directly used by chewing or soaking in water overnight, then consuming along with its water.

    Rose also can be taken in the form of juices or jams. In one day one should eat 10 grams, and do this regularly.

    10. Marigold

    The use of marigold flowers is very beneficial in the healing the condition of ulcerative colitis, because of its anti-inflammatory properties. It also suppresses acid secretion in the stomach.
