The Ayurveda Experience June 14, 2017

This spinach soup for weight loss recipe is easy to make and satisfying, not to mention lean and nutritious.

Spinach has long been famous for its ability to give energy instantaneously. Remember Popeye the Sailor Man? While this leafy green won’t cause your biceps to inflate like balloons, it is dense in vitamins and minerals, low in calories and versatile in cooking.

Spinach is considered one of the healthiest foods in the world. Spinach is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Also, it’s low in calories and is known to be healthy for the heart.

Spinach is a good source of vitamins A and C, and the minerals manganese, zinc and selenium. This makes spinach useful in protecting various systems and functions within the body, from digestive health to eye sight.

In Ayurveda spinach has more of Vata’s qualities, so it’s best consumed in Pitta and Kapha seasons, that is from March to October. Spinach has detoxifying properties and is also known to nourish the body. It is ideal for those looking for weight loss in a healthy way.

    Ingredients

    1 tsp ghee
    1 small stick of cinnamon
    1 bay leaf
    4 whole cloves
    3 cloves of garlic

    3 cups spinach
    salt, to taste
    black pepper, to taste
    1/2 cup hot water

    Instructions

Heat one teaspoon of ghee in a soup pot. Add the bay leaf, cinnamon and cloves. Sauté for one minute, until the aroma starts to rise. Add the onion and garlic and sauté for a couple more minutes, until the onion turns transparent. Now add the chopped spinach. Sauté it for 5 more minutes until the leaves shrink and the raw smell goes away. Now remove the cloves, bay leaf and cinnamon stick and puree the rest smoothly in a blender. Add 1/2 cup of hot water and reheat over a medium flame. When it comes to a boil, remove from the stove top, add salt and pepper to taste and serve hot.

This soup is super healthy. It’s low in calories and cholesterol and is good for brain health and weight loss. Enjoy!
