Pitta And Kapha Pacifying Chickpea Salad

  • 1 cupwhole chickpeas, boiled
  • ½ tomato, finely chopped
  • ¼onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp finely choppedcoriander
  • 1 tspred chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp chaat masala (available at Indian stores)
  • 1/2 tsp dry mango powder
  • 1-2 tbsp lemon juice (or to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • Some raw mango, finely chopped(optional)


  1. Soak whole chickpeas overnight (or for 8 hours).
  2. Boil the whole chickpeas until you can easily mash them between your fingers.
  3. Mix all the ingredients together. Make sure the chickpeas are warm when you mix the ingredients, it helps to absorb the spices better.
  4. Serve warm and enjoy!

Comments: Chickpeas make a low glycemic, fibrous snack, rich in proteins which makes one feel full. They can be taken as a meal by themselves after you get accustomed to them. Start with small quantities to get your tummy adjusted. Their gassiness is countered by the addition of spices and lemon juice. Adjust the sourness by varying the amount of lemon juice, chaat masala and dry mango powder, as per your taste. A great snack to curb food cravings.

Chickpeas are Pitta and Kapha pacifying and Vata aggravating. Spices like cumin, mango powder, salt and lemon juice help to negate its Vata aggravating potential. However people having high tendency for gas formation after meals may avoid this dish.
